Pistol's music is obviously a gajillion times better, and if you disagree your ears are a retard, but I think there's an argument for the Clash being more "important" and influential, especially when you consider the touring they did, and that they existed beyond that brief moment the Pistols did, and the political angle. I mean, that shit sounds pretty limp and white as fuck now, but if you read old rock mags at the time (Lester Bangs' writing in particular) the lefty politics thing seemed to really have an impact. Not that that's an excuse for paying them any mind today, but since we're talking "IMPORTANCE" or whatever...
Of course most UK punk interviews I read from the '77-'82 school are always "we met at a Pistols gig" or "I saw the Pistols on TV" and not "we heard the White Riot single." I dunno, maybe the Clash are only important if you're really into the Police (who I think might have actually met at a Pistols gig, but I could be mistaken).
Either way, as far as '76/'77 goes, I'll take the first Cheap Trick Lp over either of those band's debuts (Pistol's demos might win by a nose, though). It's like while all these English fags were playing dress up, these fuckin' scumbags from, what, ILLINOIS (!) were busy actually writting songs AND looking cooler. And what was Kiss doing in '77? Love Gun? That was probably a better record too.
