did your parents ever intervene in any way regarding your musical interests when you were growing up?
- when i was about 7-9 i liked any kind of music that involved dudes with long hair and jagged or funny shaped guitars, and had no ability to discern between "good" metal and "hard rock". so, this included bon jovi and whitesnake and iron maiden and slayer. around this time, there was a pretty big moral panic about satanism in rock music and it was often the topic of talk shows and church sermons, etc. judas priest was being blamed for tweakers shooting themselves and there were rumors that AC/DC stood for "against christ/devil's children". my mom was invited by a coworker to go to a parents meeting on heavy metal and satanism, and as a result i basically had to hide certain tapes out of fear that she would throw them out. this only lasted about 6 months, though, and my first concert (other than bb king with my parents) was iron maiden with my friend's older brother on the 'seventh son of the seventh son' tour. she was also convinced that jon bon jovi's superman "S" tattoo was secret code for "satan", and now like most moms i'm sure she thinks he's hot. - when i got my first studded bracelet, my mom confronted me and asked me if i was into s&m. i was 13 and didn't know that the bracelets could be bought at places like the crypt and such. so, i did actually get it from a sex shop; where i stood outside and paid an older dude to go in and buy me one. The only time my mom was ever weirded out about music I was into was when I got into hardcore and punk. I was 15 about to be 16. All she knew is I would go to shows at sketchy looking places and they wouldn't end until like midnight. For a while she would make excuses for me on why I couldn't go see Find Him and Kill Him on a Friday night and for a while it worked. I would always have something to do that night or something to do the next morning. She did let me start playing bass guitar and jam with horrendous sounding guitar riffs and drums in her garage. I'd say after about a year she stopped caring and saw I wasn't some retarded poser cholo fuck up or some shit. So it was all good.
When I was younger I got a whole lot of the typical Catholic Mexican mom "The devil will come out of a toy gun and shoot you with a real bullet if you play with them" kind of shit but that side of my mom was long gone by the time I was 15. Oh, even now I have to wear my Fucked Up and one Terror shirt I have with the "F" word on it inside out around her

before my mom was sucked into, albeit only briefly, the satanism hysteria, she tried to bond with me over led zepplin. she bought me led zepplin II after hearing 'sweet child o mine' and thinking axl sounded like robert plant.
but after i got into public enemy and watching rap city/yo! mtv raps every day she was bummed. though, my parents were supportive of my interests in starter jackets because they thought i was getting into sports. well, supportive enough to get me generic knock offs of starter jackets. my friend jose's catholic mom poured holy water all over his exploited tapes when she discovered his "jesus is dead" cassingle. i imagine being a queer mexican punk dude in encanto sucked in the late-80's/early-90's. my mom tried really hard to stop me from going to shows or basically liking the music i like. She told me i couldn't go to a show once because i might get raped (i was getting a ride with a bunch of guys, actually it was cusano and other people), she would also hide my band shirts which i would steal back. She never touched my records though. She still gives me shit for liking the music i like but shes calmed down. My dad just thinks i'm weird and can't believe people in mexico actually like what i like.

this thread is inspired by another messageboard, and this book.
![]() "Punk, Heavy Metal and anarchy are the same thing. No one's in charge. No one gives orders. The rules are simple: there are no rules. If you see any orderliness or decency about you, destroy it. That's the political side of Punk/Metal. The way outright Paganism has crept into the picture is an even scarier development. Now the Punks don't just dance together, they kill together... There aren't many rapes at Post-Punk concerts, because the people have become asexual." (page 266) |

in response to the rape thing... other than the incident the FHAKH song was about, when i first started going to big shows at soma i saw a TON of girls being sexually assaulted at shows. especially when "floating". ugh.

i want to hear stories from older people, like tim or burt, when shows were like a billion times scarier and how their parents responded. even moreso, i'm curious about what it was like to be into hip hop in san diego during the 80's. but i don't know if there's anyone on this boar that can cover the latter question.
