do teenagers just getting into punk these days still as a rule go through a really awkward looking phase? not physically, but as in dress and hair when they're trying to figure out what their deal is.
i never see kids anymore with poorly knox'ed liberty spikes, safety hawks, baggy bondage pants and dogchain necklaces/bracelets, union jack or upside down american flags on their white out covered backpacks. because of this, i assume teenage punks get threatened or beat up a lot less too.

nah i think the internet has taken care of that. so you dont run into wierdos whose two favorite bands are like chaos uk and minor threat or something like that because thats all they have been exposed too.
for example there's a kid in esco who is pretty young who has is covered ino nothing but obscure scandi band patches. im sure you wouldnt see anything like that in some random ass town. although i dont necessarily think thats a good thing since you dont have years of looking like an idiot and getting made fun of and beaten up by randoms in public and them made fun of and beaten up by older punx in the know i think it swells the ranks with wishy washy kids who drop out even faster (prob for some even more obscure trend they read about on wikipedia)

I'm not as old as either of you but I guess the surge of maintstream "punk" (Green Day) contributed to a lot of what you saw in high school. Sure some of these kids graduated to actual punk and kept the look they had and some discovered hardcore and some started rapping or something. I guess what I saw more of was Korn/Lim Bizkit kids doing the same shit but without the studded jackets and shit. More like baggy pants with liberty spikes. And I guess what these kids are doing now is more along the lines of that whole Brokencyde thing. Just my opinion.

haha. this is what i was thinking of. i remember walking down poway boulevard and having vans full of jocks pull over to fight us, or families in station wagons calling us "fags" in unison. i can't imagine how it must've been like in the 80's or 70's. but mostly i think i agree with dave that i think kids develop a stronger appreciation for punk, etc. when they make that effort against difficult circumstances, and make some embarrassing choices along the way.

Everybody already looks more extreme than the average punk used to look like. Punk, hardcore, rap, r&b, cholos, metal, average joe - everyone already has dyed hair, piercings, weird clothes, shaved heads, crazy hair... You can't rebel by dressing that way anymore.

haha. i forgot about leopard print. i have definitely dated girls that wore leopard print skirts.
i had a friend that would buy golf pants at salvation army, sew them tight, and turn them into bondage pants. ugh in retrospect, i think the anglophilia was the funniest part. i never did this, but i definitely had friends that had union jack patches or shirts. as if there's something inherently punk or offensive in being british.
