I was watching KPBS and they had a National Geographic show on. I decided to check it out and it was pretty awesome.
The show focused on how the Taliban destroyed Buddhist statues, destroyed paintings, and burned film(educational films and documentaries) in 2001. Can you imagine that? That's Afghanistan's culture and history. That's like how the Nazi's burned books and destroyed works of art from all over the world. Its a real horror.
Anyways, they showed footage of these huge statures being blown up. They made "Hazaras", local people from that area of Afghanistan and the most persecuted during the Taliban's reign, blow up the statues that they have lived around for centuries. They forced them at gun point, tied ropes around their waists and hoisted them up, drilled holes, filled the holes with dynamite, and blew that shit up. Talk about fucked up!
Some time in 2003 or 2004, some archaeologist read something about a third Buddha. Some traveling monk wrote about it and this archaeologist is trying to look for it. Its like treasure hunting. Think about that. Rediscovering history that has been lost to time. I always wanted to be like Indiana Jones...
Anyways here is some info on the Buddhas...
